This Quick Guide Reviews the functionality of a Chromebook with Curve Hero.
A Chromebook can be an inexpensive way to get an extra terminal into an office. They are small and very portable, making them an excellent option for smaller office spaces that utilize a wireless internet connection.
However, there are drawbacks that are necessary to understand before purchasing a Chromebook for an office to use with Hero. First, it is important to understand that a Chromebook is not a Windows PC or a Mac. It uses a proprietary operating system developed by Google called Chrome OS, which is targeted around specific functions involving a Google user account and cannot perform many of the native functions that Windows or macOS can.
With Hero, limitations become apparent when dealing with functionality that involves interaction with the native OS:
1. Imaging Support: Software installations are not supported by Chrome OS; therefore, our Curve Capture software used for imaging cannot be installed. This also means that drivers for sensors and TWAIN installations cannot be used. In short, a Chromebook cannot be used for imaging.
2. Payment Hardware: Bluefin payments are not supported because the Bluefin keypad requires driver installations that Chrome OS does not allow, rendering the hardware unusable.
3. File Handling: Reading CSV files is not natively supported, which affects the functionality of exporting reports to CSV.
4. Screen Resolution: The resolution on many Chromebook screens is low, and Hero may trigger a warning upon login notifying the user of this fact.
Apart from the issues listed above, Hero on a Chromebook runs the same as it does on a Windows PC or Mac. It can be an excellent solution for an office looking to add an extra device to support daily scheduling, charting, and billing needs.
